Synopsis: Neck pain can be associated with significant personal, social and economic burdens and the Global Burden of Disease Study indicates that its recurrent or persistent nature is a major contributor. There is a wealth of evidence demonstrating that impaired neuromuscular and sensorimotor control is associated with neck pain as readily observed in painful extremity disorders. Relief of neck pain does not automatically restore this control and it will be proposed that rehabilitation of these deficits is an essential component in attempts to decrease recurrent episodes of neck pain. Simple preventative and maintenance programs that are easy and encourage compliance are required for lifetime care.

Presenter: 

Gwendolen Jull is a Professor Emeriti in Physiotherapy at The University of Queensland. She is a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists. Her research and clinical interests are in cervicogenic headache, whiplash associated disorders, manual therapy and quantifying the dysfunction in the cervical motor and sensorimotor systems as a basis for therapeutic exercise in the rehabilitation of neck disorders. Gwen has published extensively in the field with over 300 publications, 40 book chapters as well as two text books. She is the co-editor of the journal, "Musculoskeletal Science and Practice"
