Description:

Current approaches to manage low back pain are failing. These are largely underpinned by biomedical and structural beliefs. Contemporary epidemiology and multidimensional research highlights that disabling low back pain should be viewed as a chronic health disorder, influenced by complex changes to the neuro-immune-endocrine systems that can sensitise spinal structures and influence motor behaviours. These changes are influenced by psychological, social, lifestyle, physical and genetic factors. A cognitive functional approach targets the modifiable factors (psychological, functional behaviours and lifestyle factors) known to drive pain and disability. This approach has a growing evidence base and can be integrated with pain management.
